Appropriation and Copyright
Professional Learning for VCE Studio Arts Teachers

This Professional Learning Day provides VCE Studio Art teachers with
materials, ideas and presentations related to the new Studio Arts Study
Design Unit 3 Area of Study 3 Outcome 3 Professional Practices and
Styles. In particular the Key Knowledge and Key Skills area: the legal
obligations and ethical considerations involved in the use of the work
of other artists in the making of anew artwork, including a familiarity
with appropriation and originality, copyright law, licensing agreements
and the moral rights of artists will be addressed. The full day program
will include Education Officer, curator and artist talks, viewing of
examples of appropriation on display at Bendigo Art Gallery, morning tea
and lunch. The morning presentations are ideal for beginning or isolated
teachers or those wishing to learn more about artists who use
appropriation and strategies for simplifying information on copyright
for students.
The afternoon program only option will feature a comprehensive
introduction to copyright in art galleries delivered by Bendigo Art
Gallery Curator Tansy Curtin and an artist talk by Pamela Irving.
Irving’s practice in mosaic, ceramics, sculpture and other media often
uses appropriation and she will discuss how she has applied copyright
