Community Mural: “Stationary Faces”, Patterson Station, Bentleigh
Launch March 4th 2012 at 10.30 am.
Hope you can come along!
“Stationary Faces” is a 150 square metre community mosaic mural on the underpass of Patterson Railway Station, Patterson Rd, Bentleigh. The mural is made up of several hundred individual mosaic faces, which have been patch-worked together to create a beautiful and lasting mosaic mural.
The project was initiated by local artist, Pamela Irving. Pamela’s goal was to engage the community in making an artwork which would reduce graffiti recycle, unwanted tiles and beautify the dull underpass environment. In order to achieve this, she received an Arts Victoria Community Partnership Grant. Pamela also received additional funding and support from Metro, VicTrack, the Department of Transport, Bostik and Tiny Pieces mosaic tools + supplies, Chicago.
Over 750 people from the local and international community have participated in the project. Each person was encouraged to express their own creativity within the theme of ‘portraits’. The combination of all of these faces culminated in a mural that symbolizes community on a local and a global scale.
The mural has received excellent media coverage and has had a very enthusiastic response from the local and international community. The work is now part of an International “Mosaic Atlas” and Patterson Station is being visited by overseas and local artists with an interest in mosaic art.
Children from all over Melbourne delight in visiting the station in order to find their ‘face’!

I visited this place for school and had no idea what to expect, but the mural is amazing. If i lived internationally, i would come see this before i had to leave. It’s such a basic concept but so inspiring to see the effort put into such a project. Thumbs up to Pamela and all the people part of this project.
Love the mural. Very humbling as a local to see.
